The Artist
Aisin-Gioro Yu-Yue (愛新覺羅 毓岳), courtesy name Zirui, was born in 1954 into a family where painting and calligraphy were a daily practice. He is the seventh son of Pu Zuo, a leading painter of the modern Song-Feng school, and a fifth-generation descendant of the Daoguang Emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
Lineage
He learned the brush from his father, Pu Zuo, and studied under his uncle, Pu Songchuang. He also received guidance in traditional brushwork theory from his relative Qi Gong. Today he carries forward the court-scholar painting lineage of the Song-Feng Painting Society.
Style and Subjects
Horses are his principal subject, alongside orchids, bamboo, birds and flowers, and landscapes. In his horses he seeks the inner spirit rather than a mere likeness, building the coat in soft, finely graded ink so that anatomy and vitality sit in balance. His orchids and bamboo are painted with a restrained, clear brush that reflects the refined spirit of literati art.
He serves as Vice-President of the Aisin-Gioro Painting School Research Association and as a consultant to the Prince Gong's Mansion Calligraphy and Painting Society.
Most of his work is held by private collectors within close artistic circles and rarely appears at commercial auction. Through it, he brings a classical court-scholar tradition into the way we live today.
