A single grey horse turns to look back, its coat built up in soft, finely graded ink. The inscription, 神韻雄風 (Shen Yun Xiong Feng), speaks of spirited grace and heroic bearing. Mounted as a hanging scroll.
Painted by Aisin-Gioro Yu-Yue (b. 1954), seventh son of the Song-Feng school master Pu Zuo and a fifth-generation descendant of the Daoguang Emperor. Trained by his father and his uncle Pu Songchuang, with guidance from Qi Gong, he is known above all for horses that capture spirit over likeness, and for orchids and bamboo in a restrained literati hand.
