A bay horse and a dappled black horse meet nose to nose, one turning back toward the other. The inscription, 重其神韻 (Zhong Qi Shen Yun), reflects the artist's guiding idea: to value the spirit within over outward likeness. Mounted as a hanging scroll.
Painted by Aisin-Gioro Yu-Yue (b. 1954), seventh son of the Song-Feng school master Pu Zuo and a fifth-generation descendant of the Daoguang Emperor. Trained by his father and his uncle Pu Songchuang, with guidance from Qi Gong, he is known above all for horses that capture spirit over likeness, and for orchids and bamboo in a restrained literati hand.
